It appears as if Square Enix has given these old features a graphical facelift, and has added other new options to play around with to boot. For example, old favorites Claude Kenni and Rena Lanford get facial expressions depending on the current game events. As was the case with The First Departure, anime cut scenes have been included as well.

Sony postpones Japan’s PSP Skype launch due to official mics

Vistrix| January 23, 2008 4:47 am

Sony has just announced that they’ll be postponing the Japanese release of Skype for the PSP which was originally set for late January, due to some issues with Sony’s official microphones. It seems that the microphone’s components failed in meeting some of Skype’s necessary certifications.

Sony didn’t want to launch their latest service without official peripherals to accompany it. With this, they decided to put the release on hold for the time being. No official date has been set for the Japanese launch.

“Solutions to enable users to start using Skype features and services on their PSP are being sought for and will be announced in due course.”

For those of you who live in the US or Europe, consider yourselves to be lucky since the corresponding PSP Skype launch won’t be affected. Sony added that it “will make no difference to the European and USA launch, which will coincide with the end of January firmware upgrade.”

Most HD Game Resolutions Not Even 720p Let Alone 1080p

Vistrix| November 16, 2007 8:35 am

907979kr9 Most HD Game Resolutions Not Even 720p Let Alone 1080p

Well it turns out that when a game box says that it runs in 720p or 1080p it’s not entirely true.

Check out two of the biggest releases of the season for example:

COD4 (360) 1024×600p 2xAA
COD4 (PS3) 1024×600p 2xAA
Uncharted (PS3) 960×1080 in 1080p

Neither Call of Duty 4 or Uncharted run in the actual resolutions.

The reason most games do this is to allow for more visual effects to be rendered to the screen without slowing the game down. Most won’t ever notice or care but it’s kind of interesting to find out the actual resolutions that games render in. Here are some more recent ones along with a huge list of older releases from the pixel counter at Beyond3D.

Def Jam: Icon (PS3) 1152×648
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (PS3) 1920×1080 FullHD
Transformers (PS3) 960×1080
Pirates of the Caribbean (PS3 720p): 960×720
Pirates of the Caribbean (PS3 1080p): 780×1080
Oblivion (360): 1024×600 (PS3 version is full 720p)
ICO (PS2): 512×224p (less than Tekken on PS1 at 512×240)
VF5 (PS3 720p): 1024×1024 (same as 360)
